Whether it is in sports or the world of celebrity, everyone loves a good comeback story, as someone battles against the odds to reach the pinnacle of their field once again or to leap back into the spotlight.
Much the same is true of once-popular games, no matter if they used to exist offline or online because there is a strong trend for games that allow their players to reminisce about gaming days gone by whether they are played via mobile emulators or on more conventional PCs, Smartphones(iOS or Android) and consoles.
Here we take a look at just some of the oldest titles that have been thrust back into the limelight in recent years, either by innovative developers who gave a game a new lease of life or because gamers suddenly fancied having an old favourite back in their lives.
Chess is a game that is hundreds of years old and yet still maintains its appeal among modern gaming audiences
Classic Games Cannot be Beaten for Longevity
One genre of game that has certainly leapt back on the scene of late is that of classic games such as chess, blackjack, and backgammon, all of which have origins that date back centuries if not millennia.
The first iterations of chess were to be found in 7th century India which at the time was a veritable hotbed of gaming culture. Chess is now on the online gaming scene thanks to fresh young players like Magnus Carlson and the Botez sisters who have made the game sexy again by streaming their exploits on platforms such as Twitch. Blackjack was first mentioned in the early 1600s in a work by literary great Miguel de Cervantes called Novelas Ejemplares. It then spread quickly from Spain to the whole of Europe and the Americas. It has now become one of the most popular casino games with blackjack tables always a staple at online casinos and land-based casinos alike, which has only renewed the game’s overall status in gaming circles. Movies like 21 and The Hangover have also kept blackjack in the public consciousness.
While backgammon may not have made quite the impact on the modern-day gaming scene as chess or blackjack, it is still worth noting that a game that originated 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia is still enthralling gamers both offline and online, showing that some games truly are timeless works of ingenuity.
Historians believe that backgammon was first invented in what is now known as Iraq
Retro Arcade Button Bashers
While no other games will ever be able to compete with those such as backgammon when it comes to longevity, there are games that existed at the outset of the digital revolution which is now setting tongues wagging in the midst of the internet and big data ages.
These are of course those original joystick wigglers and button mashers that people used to play in arcades of old during the 1970s and 80s. Games that come to mind include Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Donkey Kong.
As the world of arcade games and video games has matured there has been significant value bestowed on what were once ground-breaking game designs and mechanics, which has, in turn, transformed these old games into powerful modern brands.
This is evidenced by the fact that new games continue to be released which directly pay homage to these original pixelated beauties. A new Donkey Kong game is said to be in the works, Pac-Man 99 was released this year for the Nintendo Switch and Space Invaders Forever is available on the same device. Because their brands are instantly recognizable for large swathes of the gaming population, people should expect even more remakes of these classic arcade games in the near future.
Trading Card Games Given New Life Online
The first-ever collectable card game, or CCG as they are known, was Magic: The Gathering which shot onto gaming club tables in 1993.
The game is still as popular as ever, but its concept has been given a real shot in the arm by the online gaming fraternity, where there are now hundreds or even thousands of such games available for people to play either online or via app stores.
